Recruiting in the Workwear, Corporate Clothing and PPE Industry

Now entering its third year, Managing Consultant Daniel Sullivan offers an insight into the challenges of recruiting in the market over the last two years and the benefits for clients who utilise an industry-focused recruitment consultancy.

The recruitment industry has changed significantly with the effects of the global financial crisis leading to a number of job losses, thus a reduction of job vacancies. The Recruitment Industry Trends 2008/09 revealed that the recruitment industry had contracted in size by £5 billion, from £27 billion to £22 billion. The 2009/10 survey showed that the industry further contracted down to £19.7 billion (www.rec.uk.com).

The clothing and PPE industry can draw similarities from this macro estimation, identifying recent organisational mergers, acquisitions and, in worse circumstances, company liquidations that have led to a number of job losses within the sector.

Whilst it is true that there is a disappearance of jobs, recruitment has never stopped. As organisations adapt to the changing requirements of the market and seek to gain competitive advantage it will be necessary to recruit individuals who have skill sets and experience in key disciplines. Therefore, it is essential for recruitment consultants to have an in-depth understanding of a client’s business to ensure they understand what type of candidate is needed. The emphasis is on reducing risk and identifying individuals who can add value from day one.
